Left

Created the first national LGBTQIA+ secretariat and defends chosen names.

Far right

Uses trans people as targets of hate, even from the floor of Congress.

Why it matters

According to ANTRA, Brazil has for almost 18 years been the country where the most trans people are killed: 80 murders in 2025. Rights such as legal recognition of chosen names and protection from violence save lives; hate speech puts those lives at risk.

Left

With the left

In 2023, the Ministry of Human Rights gained its first national secretariat dedicated to LGBTQIA+ people, with public policies and reporting channels. Chosen names are respected in public services, and the issue is once again treated as a right, not a threat.

Far right

With the far right

Trans people become a constant target of speeches and bills that try to take away rights, from bathroom access to health care. On Women’s Day 2023, a PL congressman took the floor of the Chamber wearing a wig to attack trans women and was reprimanded by the Speaker.
